Steam Market not working: causes and checks

Steam Market not working: causes and checks

Steam almost always shows the exact reason right in the error message. The problem is that there are about eight reasons and they are from different areas: some about the account, others about the wallet, others about a specific item. Let's take it in order.

At a glance

The site is unavailable, the lot is not exhibited, the purchase does not go through. Step-by-step diagnostics: account status, wallet, region and the item itself.

01

Start with the error message

Try to perform the action and read the entire message without closing it. It almost always says what exactly is missing, and half the questions disappear right away.

If the site does not open at all, first check the status of Steam itself. Service sometimes sucks, and then it’s not about you. You can check this by going to a store or community: if they are slow, wait an hour.

02

Account restrictions

Limited account. Until $5 or equivalent is spent at Steam, the site is closed entirely.

There is no mobile authenticator or it has been connected for less than seven days. In this case, you cannot sell; you can usually buy.

Recent password change or reset. Steam temporarily restricts trading, the period is shown in the message.

Login from a new device. The restriction will be lifted in a few days.

Steam Guard has been disabled. This is 15 days without trading.

03

Wallet and regional issues

Insufficient funds taking into account the reserve. Active buy orders reserve money, and there may be less of it in your wallet than it seems. Check your buy orders and cancel unnecessary ones.

The wallet currency does not match the region currency. This happens after changing the store country: Steam may limit operations until the settings are in order.

Recent change of store region or payment method. This is also a reason for a time limit.

Remember
  • Purchase requests are the most common reason for “missing” money in your wallet.
  • Do not change the region of the store for the sake of prices: this disrupts trade for a long time.
  • Wallet replenishment counts towards the $5 limit.
04

Item restrictions

The item is locked after purchase or exchange - seven days. The date line is visible right in its description.

The item is not for sale in principle: some of the rewards, items from the Points and Gifts Store are marked as non-tradable.

The item has already been displayed. Check the active advertisements section - it may have been there since last time.

05

What will not help

New account. It will be limited from scratch and will require the same $5, plus a new week for the authenticator.

VPN and region change. Bypassing regional restrictions violates the rules and may result in a ban, and trading timers will not be reduced.

Any “market unblocking services”. They do not exist; Steam support does not remove standard protective restrictions manually.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I put skin up for sale?

Most often, there is a seven-day blocking of an item or account restriction: limited status, lack of a mobile authenticator, recent password change.

Why doesn't the market work after changing my password?

Steam temporarily limits trading in case the password is not changed by the owner. The exact date is shown in the message.

I have money in my wallet, but I can’t buy it. Why?

Check active buy orders - they are reserving funds. Canceling a buy order returns the money to your available balance.

Will it help to create a new account?

No. The new account will receive the same restrictions from scratch, including a $5 limit and a one-week wait after connecting an authenticator.

Can support open the site ahead of schedule?

No. Standard protective restrictions cannot be removed manually.
