Steam Market fees: buyer total and seller proceeds

The price a buyer pays and the amount a seller receives are different. For a sale, the most useful number is Steam’s ‘You receive’ field. Always read the final calculation rather than subtracting a percentage in your head.
Understand how Steam Market fees affect the amount you receive. Use the confirmation form and calculate break-even prices without percentage mistakes.
Why adding 15% is not the same as taking off 15%
For a simplified example with combined fees equal to 15% of the seller’s proceeds, a seller receiving 10 would require a buyer total of 11.50. The fee is 1.50, which is about 13.04% of that buyer total. Subtracting 15% from 11.50 would therefore give the wrong answer. Actual amounts depend on the game, currency, minimum charges and rounding.
This distinction matters when calculating a resale price. If your total purchase cost was 10, a sale listing at 10 does not recover that cost. Use the listing form to find the buyer total that leaves you at least 10 after fees. Do not include a hoped-for future price as profit before a sale actually happens.
Small prices make minimum charges important
At low item prices, minimum fees and currency rounding can produce an effective percentage much larger than the simplified example. Estimate a batch by its real per-item proceeds, not by applying one percentage to the total inventory value.
Before confirming a listing, check the selected item, quantity, buyer total and seller proceeds. Save those amounts in your trade journal. For external markets, calculate their charges separately: listing, deposit, conversion and withdrawal fees may follow entirely different rules. Steam’s displayed fee calculation should not be copied to an unrelated service.
Frequently asked questions
Is one percentage accurate for every Steam item?
No. Publisher fees, minimum charges and rounding can differ. The sale form gives the applicable amounts for that item and currency.
Which number belongs in my profit calculation?
Use the actual net proceeds, minus your complete acquisition cost and any other expenses. The headline sale price overstates what you keep.

Can you withdraw Steam Wallet funds?
Understand the difference between Steam Wallet credit, a refund and selling an eligible item elsewhere. Avoid services promising guaranteed wallet withdrawals.
