Steam trade holds: why a trade can be delayed

Trade hold, also known as escrow, is a protective retention of an already confirmed exchange. Items leave your inventory immediately, but only reach the other side after 15 days. This was done for one reason: so that the owner of the hacked account has time to notice the theft and cancel the operation.
What is escrow, under what conditions does it turn on, can it be reduced and what to do if the exchange has already been placed on hold.
When a trade hold applies
The condition is simple: both parties must have an active Steam Guard mobile authenticator connected for at least seven days. If at least one of them doesn’t have it or it was connected recently, the exchange goes on hold.
That is, the hold may appear not because of you, but because of your partner. If you sell skin on the site, and its bot is fine, the problem is almost always on your side.
The hold also appears after disabling Steam Guard, changing devices, and in other situations when Steam considers the account to be temporarily unsafe. The exact deadline is always shown in the trade offer itself before confirmation.
How to avoid a trade hold
There is only one way: connect a mobile authenticator and wait seven days. After this, exchanges begin to take place instantly.
An important detail that is mistaken: connecting an authenticator right now will not cancel the hold that has already begun. The exchange that has been placed on hold will arrive in 15 days, regardless of what you do next.
There is no way to shorten the period. Steam support does not manually remove trading restrictions, and this is explicitly written in its help.
- Set up an authenticator a week before you plan to trade.
- Before making a trade on the site, make sure that you do not have a hold - otherwise the payment will freeze for two weeks.
- Never turn off Steam Guard "for a minute."
Common misconceptions
Any offer to “bypass the hold,” “accelerate escrow,” or “exchange through a guarantor to bypass the hold” is fraudulent. It is technically impossible to bypass it, and all such schemes end the same way.
Separately: Canceling an already accepted held exchange may result in additional trade restrictions. If you see an exchange on hold that you did not make, this is not a reason to panic and click buttons, but a reason to immediately check the security of your account: change passwords from a clean device and end other people’s sessions.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a trade hold last?
Standard 15 days. The exact deadline is shown in the trade offer itself before confirmation.
How can I avoid a trade hold?
Connect the Steam Guard mobile authenticator and wait seven days. There are no other ways.
Will adding an authenticator now shorten an existing hold?
No. The hold that has already started will count to the end. Changes apply only to future exchanges.
Can Steam Support remove the hold?
No. Steam explicitly states that trading restrictions are not manually changed.
Why is there a hold even though I use an authenticator?
Most likely, it has been connected for less than seven days, or there is a limitation on the exchange partner’s side.
