Why seemingly identical skins have different prices

Why seemingly identical skins have different prices

You open an item page and see listings ranging from one thousand to five thousand, all under the same name. Check the possible reasons in the order below; the difference is often explained by the first or second step.

At a glance

I see two lots with the same name and twice the price difference. Eight reasons in order of verification - from condition and float to the seller’s banal inflated price.

01

1. Exterior

The first thing to exclude. Each condition has its own separate page on the Marketplace, but in searches and on third-party sites, lots of different conditions can easily be confused.

Check the full title, including the parentheses at the end. "Field-Tested" and "Minimal Wear" are different products with different prices, which explains most of the discrepancies.

02

2. Float within the same exterior

If the status matches, see the exact value. The Field-Tested range is 0.15 to 0.38, which is very wide. The example with 0.152 looks almost like Minimal Wear, and the one with 0.37 is noticeably shabby.

Lots at the lower end of the range are sold quickly and often at a premium. This is a normal and understandable price difference.

03

3. Pattern

On some coatings, the number pattern changes the pattern radically. Case Hardened with an almost completely blue surface and regular Case Hardened are tens of times different with the same name and float.

On surfaces with a fixed pattern, pattern does not affect anything. It only makes sense to check it where the texture is uneven.

04

4. Applied stickers

Stickers are part of the item and are not included in the title. skin with four expensive stickers and naked skin look the same in the listing until you open the lot.

You need to look at the checker: it will show the name of each sticker and the percentage of scraping. Based on the picture in the list, it is almost impossible to distinguish an expensive holographic one from a cheap regular one.

05

5. Item variant

The StatTrak version is more expensive than the regular one, the souvenir version is a separate category with its own price. This is visible in the full title, but is easily missed during a quick glance.

06

6. Trade restrictions

An item with active blocking is cheaper than the same available one. A buyer who needs skin now will not pay full price for a blocked one.

This does not appear on the Steam Marketplace; everything is sold there the same way. But on third-party platforms and in direct exchanges the difference is noticeable.

07

7. Marketplace and currency

The same skin in Steam and on a third-party service costs different money, because these are different markets with different currencies. The balance of Steam is valued lower than real rubles.

These numbers cannot be compared directly - first you need to bring both to the same number, taking into account commissions and withdrawals.

08

8. An unrealistic asking price

If none of the above points apply, the simplest explanation remains: the seller set a price above the market. There are different reasons - from relying on an inattentive buyer to a reluctance to sell at all.

Such lots hang for months and do not in any way affect the real price of the item. Focus on completed transactions and the order book, and not on the most expensive lot on the list.

Remember
  • Check in order - in 80% of cases the answer is in the first two points.
  • An expensive item on the list does not raise the market price.
  • Check a suspiciously cheap lot especially carefully: it is either in a different condition or a bait.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same skin cost twice as much?

Most often it is a matter of the state or the exact value of float. Further on the list: pattern, stickers, item type, exchange blocking.

Why is the price at Steam higher than on a third-party site?

These are different markets: in Steam the calculation is based on the balance of the wallet, which cannot be cashed out, so it is valued lower than real money.

How can I see the stickers on the lot?

Open the inspect link of the lot in the checker - it will show each sticker with the name and scraping percentage.

Is it worth taking the cheapest lot?

Only after checking. A price that is too low usually means a high float, a different condition, or a problem with the offer itself.

Does blocking an exchange affect the price?

On the Steam Marketplace - no, everything is sold there the same way. On third-party sites and in direct exchanges, a locked item is cheaper.
