Steam Points: how to earn and spend them
Steam Points are an internal reward currency earned through purchases on Steam and used for profile customization and related features. They cannot be sold, traded or converted back into money. Keep that distinction in mind before trying to accumulate them.
Where do points come from, what can you buy in the Points Store, why these items cannot be sold, and how to create a profile without spending a single point.
How you earn points
The main source is purchases at Steam itself. Points are awarded in proportion to the amount spent, the standard rate is about a hundred points for every dollar spent.
Additional accruals occur during seasonal sales and events: for completing tasks, voting in Steam Awards and similar activities.
Replenishing your wallet does not in itself give you points - they are awarded at the time of spending, and not at the time of replenishment.
What you can spend them on
Everything related to design: animated avatars, avatar frames, profile backgrounds, mini profile backgrounds and frames, stickers and animated profile stickers, chat effects, storefront stickers and profile themes.
Separately, there is a free section: some design items are given away without any points at all. If the task is simply to refresh your profile, you should start there.
You can also spend points to reward someone else's review or discussion - this is a way to thank the author, and not to get something for yourself.
What points cannot do
Cannot be sold, exchanged, gifted or transferred to another account. Everything purchased with points is linked to your account forever.
Cannot be returned: purchases in the points Store are irreversible, so before purchasing an expensive design, you should see how it looks in preview.
You cannot purchase points directly as a separate cash transaction. They are awarded in connection with eligible spending on Steam.
And most importantly: the points have nothing to do with the skins market. It makes no sense to evaluate the “account value” by the number of points.
