How much money do you need to start trading skins?

Short answer: the working minimum is about 3,000–5,000 rubles. Below this, the commission and the minimum transaction size eat up everything, and you won’t be able to learn anything. Let's look at why this is so and what changes as the budget grows.
Why does mathematics not work on a small budget, what is really available at 3, 15 and 50 thousand and how many transactions are needed for the budget to grow noticeably.
Why a small budget is restrictive
The Steam commission has a minimum - one minimum unit of currency for each of the two fees. On an item for 3 ₽, the seller receives 1 ₽: the commission eats up two-thirds.
The effect weakens as the price increases and becomes unnoticeable from about 300–500 rubles per item. That is, it makes sense to work starting from this level, and for a thousand rubles you will buy two or three such items.
Two subjects are not enough not because there is not enough money, but because there are not enough attempts. You won’t see patterns, you won’t collect statistics, and you’ll perceive any random failure as a system.
What different budgets allow
3,000–5,000 ₽. Educational budget. Five to ten liquid items in the range of 300–1,000 rubles, simple transactions, the task is to learn to count and not lose on stupid things. Profit here is immaterial, and that's okay.
10,000–20,000 ₽. A turnover appears. You can hold several positions at the same time, leave some of the money free for good offers and allow yourself one unsuccessful purchase without stopping all work.
50,000 ₽ and above. A segment of expensive items and price premium for rare parameters opens. At the same time, demands are growing: discipline, accounting and understanding of liquidity are needed here, otherwise money simply freezes in illiquid stock.
Note that at no level is there a get-rich-quick scheme. Only the scale and speed of learning changes.
- Keep part of your budget free - otherwise you won’t be able to buy a good position.
- No borrowed money at any budget level.
- Money that is needed for something real is not put here.
Realistic growth calculations
The average margin on a transaction after commission is a few percent. Suppose you get 5% net and the transaction cycle takes a week.
With such inputs, the budget doubles in about fifteen successful cycles in a row. Without a single mistake. In reality, some transactions will be unprofitable, some items will freeze, and the period will extend significantly.
This is not an argument against trading. This is an argument against expecting that the starting 5,000 will turn into 50,000 in a month. This does not happen without luck, and you don’t build a strategy around luck.
What you need besides money
Mobile authenticator connected at least a week before the first transaction. Without it, all exchanges hang for 15 days.
Withdrawn restricted account status - $5 or equivalent spent in Steam.
Table for accounting. Without it, you won’t know your real result, and memory always paints a better picture than it is.
And time. An hour a day to watch the market gives more than doubling your budget: an understanding of the normal price can only be gained by observation.
Frequently asked questions
What amount can I start trading skins with?
The working minimum is about 3,000–5,000 rubles. For smaller amounts, the minimum commission Steam eats up the margin, and you won’t be able to learn how to count transactions.
Is it possible to start with 500 rubles?
Technically yes, practically meaningless. On cheap items, the commission takes too much, and the number of transactions is not enough to learn anything.
How much can you earn with 5,000 rubles?
With a margin of around 5% per cycle and weekly turnover, the budget doubles within a few months in an ideal scenario. In reality, it takes longer due to unsuccessful transactions.
Do you need to invest everything at once?
No. Always keep part of your budget free, otherwise you won’t be able to take advantage of a good offer and start selling at a loss out of impatience.
Is it worth borrowing for trading?
No. The skins market is volatile and does not guarantee anything, and borrowed money requires repayment on time, regardless of market conditions.
