How to get a better price when selling a skin

There are only three ways to sell at a higher price than the market price, and none of them are about trickery. Or your copy has a feature that they pay for. Or you sell it where there is demand for it. Or you are ready to wait longer than other sellers.
It is more expensive for three reasons: the peculiarity of the specimen, the right market and time. How to find a justification for the additional payment and how much the wait actually costs.
Identify and document distinctive features
Before selling, open the inspect link of your item in the checker. Check the exact float, number pattern, stickers and their wear. The mass price does not take this into account, and selling a valuable copy at it is the most offensive way to lose money.
Next, the feature needs to be proven to the buyer, and not declared. “Rare pattern” without a number and without comparison are empty words. Indicate specifics in the description: number, value of float, names of stickers.
The amount of the surcharge is determined by completed sales of similar items. If there are no such sales, the market does not confirm additional payments - you can ask as much as you like, it will not create a buyer.
Choose the right market
Sell typical liquid skin where there are the most buyers - on the mass market. He doesn’t need any special audience, he just needs circulation.
A rare pattern, an expensive sticker craft or an extreme float will fail on the mass market: there it will be valued as an ordinary copy. Such items end up in marketplaces and communities where buyers know how to read these parameters and are willing to pay for them.
Decide separately whether you need rubles or a Steam balance. In Steam the figure is always higher, but it is a different currency with a different use.
- The same skin may cost differently on different sites - this is normal, not a mistake.
- Don’t put an expensive item on quick sell: there is always a discount there.
- Before taking an item to a new site, test it with a small transaction.
The cost of waiting
Waiting is also an expense, it’s just not visible in the report. Money frozen in an item for three months does not work during this time.
Therefore, the decision is made like this: calculate how many percent more expensive you want to sell and how many weeks it will take. An increase of 10% per month of waiting usually makes sense. An increase of 5% in six months is almost never.
Determine the minimum acceptable price in advance, before listing the lot. This protects against two extremes: from panic with a price drop in the first week and from stubbornness when an item hangs for a year out of principle.
What to avoid
Put up a deliberately overpriced lot “to raise the price.” One lot does not move the market, and your item simply will not be seen by buyers who filter by price.
Agree to the schemes “I will sell at a higher price through my person.” Any off-site transaction is a transaction without protection.
Scrape off stickers before selling for a “cleaner look.” This is irreversible and almost always reduces the price.
Sell immediately after a major update if you can wait: the market is unstable at such times.
Frequently asked questions
How do I understand that my skin is more expensive than usual?
Check float, pattern and stickers in the checker, and then find completed sales of similar items. The surcharge is confirmed only by real transactions.
Should you always wait for the maximum price?
No. Waiting freezes money. Calculate the increase as a percentage against the term: 10% in a month usually pays off, 5% in six months does not.
Is it possible to add the full cost of stickers to the price of a skin?
No. The market only pays a portion, and for cheap stickers that portion is close to zero.
Where to sell more expensively - in Steam or on the site?
In Steam the price tag is higher, but this is the balance of the wallet. It will cost less in rubles. You need to compare taking into account what you will do with the money.
Why is no one buying my item?
Most often the price is higher than the market. Check order book: if the best bid is much lower than your lot, there are no buyers at that price.
