Skin liquidity: how to judge whether an item will sell

Liquidity is the answer to the question “how quickly can I turn this item back into cash without losing value.” For a beginner, this is a more important indicator than potential profit, because an illiquid item freezes the entire budget.
Three signs of a liquid item, how to measure liquidity in a minute and why an expensive skin is almost always more difficult to sell than a cheap one.
Three signs of liquidity
Regular deals. The graph shows that the item is sold every day, and not three pieces per month.
Narrow spread. The gap between the best bid and the cheapest lot is small, which means buyers and sellers agree on the assessment.
Interchangeability. The copies are approximately the same, and the buyer does not care which one to take. As soon as the price begins to depend on pattern or stickers, liquidity drops: the buyer needs to understand, and few do.
A quick liquidity check
Open the item page. Look at the sales volume for the week on the chart and calculate the spread on order book. This is enough for the solution.
A rough guideline: dozens of trades per day and a spread within a few percent - a liquid item. Single transactions per week and a spread of 20% are illiquid, no matter what the seller says.
Another quick test: look at how many lots are on sale. If there are hundreds of them, and there are few transactions, the line of sellers is long, and you will stand at the end of it.
- The liquidity of the same skin differs on different platforms.
- It changes over time: after updates and events, interest shifts.
- Liquid ≠ profitable. These are different properties of an object.
Why expensive items can be less liquid
The higher the price, the fewer people can afford it. Almost anyone can buy a skin for 500 rubles, a knife for 100,000 rubles can be bought by several dozen people in the country, and not today.
Hence the rule that saves nerves: the more expensive the item, the longer you plan for the sale period. Expensive things don’t sell quickly without a noticeable discount - it’s not a bad market, it’s the mathematics of demand.
For a beginner, the conclusion is simple: you need to start from the middle of the price range. There is enough turnover to learn, and enough money so that the commission does not eat everything up.
If you already own an illiquid item
Don’t sell it in a panic on the first day - in an illiquid market, an urgent sale costs the most. Set an adequate price and leave the item standing.
At the same time, calculate how much money is frozen and how long you are willing to wait. If the amount interferes with working with the rest of your budget, it is better to accept the discount now than wait a year.
And write this trade down in a journal with a note about why you made it. People usually buy illiquid goods for one reason - they liked the item, but they missed the volume check.
Frequently asked questions
What is skin liquidity?
The ability to quickly sell an item at a price close to the market price. Determined by the volume of transactions and the width of the spread.
Which skins are most liquid?
Popular mid-range items with a high number of trades and interchangeable copies: cases, running skins on AK, M4 and AWP.
Can an expensive item be liquid?
Regarding its category, yes, but in absolute terms, the higher the price, the fewer buyers and the longer the sale.
Does liquidity stay constant?
No. It changes along with demand: after updates, operations and the appearance of new collections, interest shifts.
Which matters more: price or liquidity?
At the start - liquidity. An illiquid item freezes the budget and prevents you from learning on the back.
