How to find your SteamID and permanent profile URL

Each Steam account has a permanent number - SteamID64. These are 17 digits starting with 7656119, and they never change: neither when changing a nickname, nor when changing an avatar, nor when changing a custom profile URL. That's why it's needed.
How does SteamID64 differ from a custom profile URL, where can you find it in two clicks, and why do you need to look at it when checking an exchange partner?
Two links to the same profile
Permanent: steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656119XXXXXXXXXX. It always works and belongs only to this account.
Custom: steamcommunity.com/id/chosen-name. It is set by the owner himself and can be changed at any time. Someone else may take the vacated name.
Hence the practical conclusion: a custom profile URL does not prove anything. The scammer takes a name similar to the site’s bot, and the profile is outwardly indistinguishable from the real one. A permanent number cannot be faked.
Finding your own SteamID
The fastest way: open your profile and look at the address bar. If a custom link is not specified, there will already be a permanent address with numbers.
If the link is set, go to edit the profile - you can see a field with the user's address there, and the number itself can be obtained by opening any internal profile page, where Steam substitutes a permanent identifier.
In the Steam client, enable the display of the address bar in the interface settings - after that the address will be visible directly in the client window.
There are also third-party services that, following any link, display all identifier formats at once. To do this, they only need a public link - nothing more.
- SteamID is public information, there is no point in hiding it.
- The SteamID64 format is always 17 digits and starts with 7656119.
- Changing your nickname and avatar does not change your number.
Practical uses
Checking the exchange partner. In the proposal, look specifically at the permanent identifier, and not at the nickname and avatar - they are copied in five seconds. This is the only reliable check when replacing an exchange.
Verification of the site bot. The SteamIDs of their bots are published on the service’s website. You compare it with what arrived, and you can immediately see a copy.
Working with third party services. Inventory evaluators, statisticians, and checkers usually only need an ID or a public link.
Contact support. In the event of a dispute, the exact account ID and exchange number speed up the proceedings.
