Where to find Steam game updates and patch notes

Where to find Steam game updates and patch notes

Updates are the main reason for sudden movements in the skins market and the main source of information about whether a game is alive or abandoned. You can watch them in three places, and each answers a different question.

Where are the official news and patch notes, how to subscribe to updates for the games you need, where to look at the technical history of patches and why a trader needs this.

01

Three sources of update information

Game page in the store. Below is a block with the latest news from the developer - announcements, patch notes and event announcements come here. The easiest source.

News section in the Steam client. Collects updates for all games in your library in one feed. Convenient if you follow several games at once.

Game community hub. There are also official announcements and discussions, in which it usually quickly becomes clear what exactly broke after the patch - sometimes earlier than it is acknowledged in the official text.

02

Technical update history

Official patch notes are not always released: the developer rolls out some updates silently. SteamDB tracks the fact that game files have been updated and shows the history by date - even things that have not been announced are visible there.

This is useful in two cases. First: understand whether the game is supported at all - if the last update was two years ago, no promises from the developer matter. Second: notice an update that was not announced.

Such services show the fact of a change, but not its content. What exactly has changed is still being looked for in patch notes and discussions.

Remember
  • No news for six months is a strong signal when buying a multiplayer game.
  • Check the update dates with dips and surges online.
  • Silent updates may be larger than announced ones.
03

Why updates matter to traders

CS2 updates are driving the skins market more than anything else. New collections, changes in rewards, the withdrawal of cases from the drop, major events - all this changes the offer, and therefore the prices.

The market reaction is usually two-phase: a sharp jump in the first days and a pullback after a couple of weeks. It’s impossible to know about the release of the update in advance, but you can avoid buying at the peak of the first wave.

Therefore, the practical habit is simple: when you see the news about the update, do not rush to make transactions on the same day. Wait until the market calms down and look at sales volume, not price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a Steam game’s patch notes?

In the news block at the bottom of the game page in the store, in the news section of the Steam client and in the game community hub.

How can I find out about unannounced updates?

Through third-party services that track changes to game files. They show the fact of the update, but not its content.

How can I tell whether a game is still maintained?

View date of last update. Six months of silence is a serious signal when buying a multiplayer game.

Do updates affect skin prices?

Strongly. Changes in the drop pool, new collections and events change the supply, and the market reacts with a sharp movement followed by a pullback.

Should I trade immediately after an update?

Usually not. The first days prices are unstable, it is wiser to wait and look at the volume of transactions, and not at the price.
