How to buy the Steam trading cards you are missing

How to buy the Steam trading cards you are missing

Eligible playtime usually provides about half of a game’s trading-card set before drops stop. You can buy or trade for the remaining cards. Here is how to complete a set without unnecessary costs.

At a glance

Find the cards missing from a Steam badge, compare the cost of complete sets and use buy orders or trades to avoid paying more than necessary.

01

Finding the cards you are missing

Open the Badges page in your profile and choose the game. It shows the complete set: the cards you own, the ones you are missing and how many are still needed to craft the badge.

The badge page links directly to the Market listing for each missing card. This is easier than searching manually and reduces the chance of buying a card from the wrong set.

Duplicate cards do not fill the missing slots in a badge set. You can sell them to offset part of the cost or trade them for cards you need.

02

Avoiding unnecessary costs

Compare the cost of a complete set, rather than one card. Sets can differ greatly in price while awarding the same badge experience.

Instead of buying immediately at the asking price, consider a buy order slightly above the current highest bid. Trading cards often have a wide spread; an order may save money if you can wait.

Buy one missing card at a time and refresh the badge page. This helps avoid buying a card you have just received through a drop or trade.

Remember
  • Look for games with the lowest price per set, not per unit.
  • Regular and foil cards belong to different sets. A badge requires cards of the same type.
  • Sell duplicates immediately, they don’t go up in price.
03

Trading instead of buying

Trade duplicate cards with other players for cards you need, sometimes one for one. Finding a match can take longer than buying, but it avoids an additional purchase and can save money on expensive sets.

When exchanging, the same security rules apply as elsewhere: check the partner’s permanent SteamID and the composition of the offer. The fact that the items are cheap does not change anything - the substitution scheme works the same on trading cards and on knives.

04

Deciding whether it is worth the cost

In practice, badge crafting almost always costs money. You buy a profile level; the background, emoticon and coupon you receive recover only part of the cost.

If your goal is a higher profile level, treat the cost as spending on customization. If your goal is profit, card collecting for badges is the wrong model: people buy cards to craft badges, rather than earning money from crafting them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see which cards I am missing?

Open the Badges page on your profile. It shows the complete set, marks missing cards and links to their Market listings.

How can I buy trading cards for less?

Place a buy order instead of an instant one. The spread on trading cards is wide, and orders are executed quickly.

Do duplicate cards help complete a badge?

No. You need the distinct cards within the same set. Sell or trade duplicates for the ones you are missing.

How many cards drop for free?

Usually about half of the set during the game time, then the drop stops.

Is collecting badges profitable?

Usually not in monetary terms. You are paying for a profile level, rather than creating a reliable income source.
